Now, Volkswagen is ready to take the GTI into the future with the ID.GTI, a concept car that previews the first all-electric GTI. The Volkswagen ID.GTI was unveiled at the IAA Mobility show in Munich, Germany, in September 2023, alongside the production version of the ID.2, a compact electric crossover that will be the entry-level model in VW's ID family of EVs.
The ID.GTI is based on the ID.2all concept that was revealed in March 2023, which showed the potential of the new MEB Entry platform, a smaller and simpler version of VW's existing MEB architecture for electric vehicles. The MEB Entry platform uses front-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive, which makes it more suitable for smaller and cheaper EVs.
The Volkswagen ID.GTI shares the same basic bodywork as the Volkswagen ID.2all but has some distinctive features that make it unmistakably a GTI. The front end features a large honeycomb grille with a red stripe and a GTI logo, flanked by LED headlights with X-shaped daytime running lights. The lower bumper has large air intakes and a black splitter. The side profile reveals black wheel arches, side skirts, and mirror caps, as well as 20-inch alloy wheels with red accents. The rear end has a roof spoiler, a diffuser, and LED taillights with an X-shaped signature. The car is painted in white with red and black details, evoking the classic GTI color scheme.
The interior of the ID.GTI is also inspired by the GTI heritage but with a modern twist. The dashboard is dominated by a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system that can display various information and functions, such as navigation, media, climate control, and driving modes. The steering wheel is flat-bottomed and has touch-sensitive buttons and paddles. The instrument cluster is digital and can show speed, range, battery level, and other data. The seats are sporty and supportive, upholstered in black fabric with red stitching and GTI logos. The door panels, floor mats, and headliner also have red accents.
The Volkswagen ID.GTI is more than just a show car; it is a preview of a production model that will go on sale in Europe in 2026. VW has not confirmed if it will bring the ID.GTI to the US market, but we hope it will. The ID.GTI promises to deliver the same fun and performance that GTI fans love but with zero emissions and instant torque.
VW has not revealed any power or performance figures for the ID.GTI yet, but we can expect it to have at least as much power as the top-spec ID.2, which will have 223 horsepower. It is not clear if the ID.GTI will have a speed limiter like the regular ID models, which are restricted to 99 mph in Europe.
The Volkswagen ID.GTI is not only a sporty car; it is also an intelligent car. The "I" in GTI now stands for Intelligence as well as Injection, according to VW. The ID.GTI will have various advanced technologies and features that will make it smarter and safer than ever before.
