The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV plug-in hybrid provides the same benefits to customers as the fully electric Mazda MX-30 while expanding upon the EV experience. The R-17.8 EV's kilowatt-hour battery allows for a pure electric range of 53 miles, while the car's brand-new 83cc single-rotor gasoline engine doubles as a generator to allow for long-distance travel without worrying about running out of juice. Because the rotary unit of the MX-30 R-EV has no mechanical connection to the wheels, it just serves as a generator, so the electric motor is always driving.

Mazda, which has spent the better part of the last half-century perfecting the rotary engine, decided to use one in this vehicle because of the rotary powerplant's capacity to generate the necessary output while remaining compact, lightweight, and simple to package. The rotary engine fits nicely in the engine compartment next to the generator and the high-output motor. With its 17.8 kilowatt battery and 50-liter fuel tank, this series plug-in hybrid can travel up to 373 miles on a single charge, and its WLTP CO2 output of just 21 g per km guarantees environmental performance at the forefront of its class.

The Mazda e-Skyactiv R-EV is now taking orders for delivery in the summer of 2023. It will be available in the same high-end trim levels as the fully electric e-Skyactiv MX-30: Prime-Lime, Exclusive-Line, and Makoto, with the range-topping Edition R being exclusive to the R-EV. Unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show, this special edition launch model stands out because of its unique color scheme of Jet Black with Maroon Rouge side pillars and a black roof, as well as several other notable characteristics.

In honor of the reintroduction of the rotary engine, only 400 special "Edition R" cars will be imported to the United Kingdom. The Prime-Line R-EV has dark gray wheels, while the Exclusive-Line, Makoto, and Edition R R-EVs have black diamond-cut wheels. Pricing for the MX-30 BEV model begins at £31,250, while the Prime-Line and Exclusive-Line R-EV variants cost the same. The Makoto R-EV costs £450 more than the standard electric model, and the R-EV-only Edition R, which costs £37,950 and is limited to 400 units in the UK, is the pinnacle of the MX-30 line.

More than 1.9 million rotary engines were manufactured by Mazda between the introduction of the Mazda Cosmo in 1967 and the conclusion of RX-8 production in 2012. Now that it has been updated to suit modern standards, the rotary engine is again being used as an energy generator. The new 8C rotary engine is an 830cc single rotor with a 120mm rotor radius and a 76mm rotor width.

Compared to the RX-8's twin-rotor Renesis engine, this one is over 15 kg lighter thanks to the usage of aluminum. Its Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) technology enhances efficiency at low rpm and low load operations, while direct fuel injection cuts emissions and boosts fuel economy. The 50-liter fuel tank of the rotary generator enables extended range without making frequent pit stops.

To minimize the battery's environmental impact over its entire life cycle and still provide enough juice for a 53-mile all-electric range, a 17.8 kWh battery was used. The MX-30 R-electric EV's motor, which has a high output of 122 kilowatts (kW) or 166 horsepower (hp), can generate up to 260 Nm of torque, and the new R-EV keeps the same laid-back, precise, and exciting driving experience as the original MX-30.

The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV has three modes of operation: normal, EV, and charge. Normal mode will provide electric propulsion if the battery is charged enough. Whenever more power is necessary than the battery can provide, such as during acceleration, the rotary engine generator will kick on in response to the amount of accelerator opening. Therefore, the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV ensures that drivers can always have fun behind the wheel with its exceptional acceleration performance.

When the driver wants to maximize the amount of time spent driving solely on electric power, he or she can activate EV mode. Because of this setting, the car will run solely on electric power until the battery dies. However, it is essential to note that the rotary engine will start and develop the energy needed for the car to accelerate as intensely as possible if the driver needs to accelerate suddenly and deliberately depresses the accelerator pedal significantly beyond a certain point.
