When it was launched in 1992, the Jeep Grand Cherokee set a new industry standard and rapidly became synonymous with luxury style and uncompromising capabilities. This fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee builds on the brand's history as the most award-winning SUV ever, with an all-new architecture, plug-in hybrid powertrain, all-new exterior design, an all-new interior featuring fine craftsmanship, and new technologies to the global full-size SUV segment. As a result, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be the most technologically sophisticated and 4x4-capable Jeep Grand Cherokee yet, as the most competent SUV brand advances toward its vision of "Zero Emission Freedom."

In the winter of 2021, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee will be available in Jeep dealerships across North America. In addition, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe will be available in North America in early 2022 and globally later that year.

Inside and out, the Grand Cherokee gives unrivaled capability and composed driving dynamics. In addition, the Jeep brand's famed 4x4 capacity is instilled in Grand Cherokee via its renowned 4x4 systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II), Quadra-Lift air suspension, and Selec-Terrain traction control system.

The all-new architecture and sculpted aerodynamic body design work together to increase vehicle performance, safety, and dependability while lowering vehicle weight, noise, vibration, and harshness substantially. The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is a full-size SUV that has been designed to enhance overall passenger safety, comfort, and convenience. In addition, it comes with a powerful punch of next-generation features and technology that set it apart from the competition.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is the first Grand Cherokee to have a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV). Its debut marks the Jeep brand's electrified objective of "Zero Emission Freedom" continuing to develop as the brand explores future mobility during an 80th anniversary year of successes, insights, and technologies.

The 4xe powertrain system combines two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic gearbox for optimal economy and capabilities in the Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve models.

The 4xe system produces 375 horsepower (280 kW) and torque of 470 lb.-ft. (637 Nm). The Grand Cherokee 4xe, aimed for a 25-mile (40-kilometer) all-electric range, is expected to return 57 MPGe and have a total range of more than 440 miles (708 km).

Stellantis' Global Medium Engine series includes the fuel-efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine. A twin-scroll, low-inertia turbocharger is attached directly to the cylinder head of the high-tech, direct-injection engine. Electric power steering and an electrically powered air conditioning compressor improve efficiency by eliminating such loads from the engine.

A high-voltage, liquid-cooled motor generator unit replaces the traditional alternator. The motor-generator rotates the engine for a smooth, fuel-saving start-stop operation and generates power for the battery pack through a belt connected to the engine crankshaft pulley.

A bigger high-voltage motor-generator replaces the torque converter in the gearbox. Two clutches manage the e-motor and engine's power and torque.

Between the engine and the motor, there is a clutch. This clutch is open while the system is in electric-only mode; thus, there is no mechanical coupling between the engine and the e-motor. When the clutch is closed, the automatic gearbox transmits the combined torque from the 2.0-liter engine and the e-motor. To increase drivability and economy, a variable clutch placed behind the e-motor regulates gearbox engagement.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is equipped with a 400-volt, 17-kWh electric vehicle battery. The battery units and controllers are housed beneath the vehicle's floor and are protected by a set of skid plates.

A specialized heating and cooling circuit is included in the battery pack system to keep the battery at its optimal temperature for optimal performance. In addition, a specialized heating unit and a chiller that uses the Grand Cherokee's air-conditioning refrigerant to decrease coolant temperature when needed are included in the system.

The 4xe system on the Grand Cherokee additionally features an Integrated Dual Charging Module (ICDM) compact device, as well as a smaller Power Inverter Module (PIM). These are placed beneath the body and are shielded with steel.

All high-voltage circuits are watertight and insulated. For example, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is capable of fording up to 24 inches of water (61 cm).

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe includes regenerative braking. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the powertrain control activates the electric motors' maximum possible regenerative braking, up to 0.25 g, to slow the vehicle, which is supplemented by the Grand Cherokee's traditional friction brakes. All four wheels provide torque for regenerative braking when 4x4 is engaged, increasing energy recovery. In addition, the battery pack receives electricity from regenerative braking to maintain or enhance the level of charge.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee combines unparalleled capabilities with controlled on-road performance. Three 4x4 systems – Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II with rear electronic limited-slip differential – start the famous off-road capabilities (eLSD). An active transfer case is standard on all three systems, which improves traction by directing torque to the wheel with the highest grip.

Front-axle detach is a new feature for the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4. When the vehicle detects that the driving conditions do not need all-wheel drive, the front-axle disconnect switches the Grand Cherokee to two-wheel drive, minimizing driveline drag and boosting fuel efficiency. When the vehicle detects that four-wheel drive is required, it automatically re-engages.

With the optional 5.7-liter V-8 engine, the Grand Cherokee can tow up to 7,200 pounds (3265 kilograms).

In combination with the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe's technologically sophisticated plug-in hybrid electric powertrain, the new Grand Cherokee lineup provides consumers a choice of two strong, fuel-efficient, and refined engines that have proven performance in any driving condition. In addition, two-step variable valve lift and variable valve timing are included in camshafts (VVT). This combination instantly adapts the engine power to the driver's demands for optimum performance and fuel economy.

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 all-aluminum engine with 293 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque is the standard. The Pentastar V-6 is known for its power and refinement. The 60-degree angle between the cylinder banks ensures smooth operation, further enhanced by accessories that attach directly to the engine block. The Pentastar V-6 engine is small, with features such as exhaust manifolds incorporated into the cylinder heads, and has won the Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems award seven times. Two-step variable valve lift and variable valve timing are included in the chain-driven dual overhead camshafts (VVT).

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine has a towing capability of up to 6,200 pounds (2,812 kg) and a driving range of more than 500 miles, considered class-leading. In the Pentastar V-6 engine, VVT with dual-independent cam phasing improves fuel economy throughout a wide torque band. From 1,800 to 6,400 rpm, over 90% of the engine's peak torque is accessible, crucial for towing or hauling.

Buyers looking for additional power may choose for the award-winning 5.7-liter V-8, which produces 357 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque. With VVT and Fuel Saver Technology, the V-8 offers performance and economy (cylinder deactivation). During light-load operation, such as highway driving, the engine management computer shuts off fuel and spark. It closes the valves to four of the engine's cylinders using Fuel Saver Technology. Then, when the driver accelerates, the mechanism quickly re-engages the deactivated cylinders. In addition, the 5.7-liter V-8 boasts a class-leading 7,200-pound towing capability (3,265 kg).

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee for 2022 is based on a team design for the fifth-generation Grand Cherokee. It's a modular, purpose-built design that can accommodate three and two rows of seating, as well as electrified 4xe capability.

The Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Compass, Jeep Gladiator, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Renegade, and Jeep Wrangler are Jeep's models. All Jeep vehicles sold outside North America are offered in both left- and right-hand drive variants to satisfy global consumer demand. Jeep is one of the brands supplied by Stellantis, a prominent worldwide carmaker, and transportation provider.
